The Gates Scholarship was establishing by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in the year 2000 with a $210 million donation to enable the outstanding graduate students outside the United States. The program of the Gates Millennium Scholars (GSM) is to provide professional development through their leadership program and scholars with personal help with their secondary education. The GMS purpose is also to support students from groups who have not had an opportunity to earn a college education and to prepare students to be leaders who can build a stronger society. The program has funded the education of more than 16,000 students since 1999 and has awarded them more than $614 million dollars to pay housing, fees, books and to pay tuition. The Gates Scholarship requires the students to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation hoped to create a network of future leaders from all over the world who can bring their commitment and vision in improving the life of citizens’ circumstances in their countries.
1236 individuals from 95 different countries have been awarded the scholarship in the first 13 years of the program from 2001-2013. By charter, about 40% of the scholars are designated for citizens of the USA. In other common countries, the scholars also have been designated for Germany (5.9%), India (5.3%), Canada (4.9%), Australia (4.1%) and China (33.0%).

Some Ways To Apply Bill Gates Scholarship
First, you can visit the Gates Millennium Scholars website (see resources are recommended) and then click “GMS Application” link.
Second, Click the “Register or login” link and then select the “Register Nominee” link if you want to register a new scholarship applicant profile.
Third, you have to complete the “Nominee” section of the website. You’ll need to enter information like name, Social Security number, contact information, race, date of birth, intended college major, the income of household, university that you want to attend, attendance history, average point of cumulative grade, accomplishments and rank of class.
Fourth, You must be nominated by an educator who is familiar with your academic record and they will have to visit the GMS website.
Fifth, You must be recommended by the individuals who are familiar with your leadership activities and community involvement to visit the GMS website.
Sixth, make sure that all parts of your application, including recommendation and nominations are completed.
