African-Americans who will be graduating from high school soon will likely be looking for practical ways to fund college. There are a number of scholarships for African-American high school seniors that are awarded to students who have already exhibiting academic excellence or made a difference in their communities.

Scholarships For African-Americans In High School

The Edison Scholars Program is one of the scholarships for African-Americans in high school. The scholarship is sponsored by Edison International, and is for students who are pursuing careers in mathematics, engineering and science. Students who are majoring in careers in these fields with financial need are eligible for this scholarship. The high school the student attends must be within a Southern California Edison service area or a high school in the Southern California Edison San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. Thirty scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree; $10,000 a year will be given to scholarship winners for four years.

Scholarships for African-Americans in high school like the African-American Future Achievers Scholarship Program provide significant financial assistance to seniors who are preparing to enter college. Students who have at least one African-American parent are eligible for this financial award. Those who apply for the scholarship must live in the vicinity of a participating Ronald McDonald House Charity Chapter. Financial need, community involvement and academic achievement are also factors that the scholarship administration will consider before awarding the funds.

Scholarships For African-Americans In High School Program

School scholarships for minorities also include the Edward S. Roth Manufacturing Engineering Scholarship. Students must be obtaining a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a college or university that is ABET-accredited. Students applying for the scholarship must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Minority students that show financial need will be given preference.

Additional school scholarships for minorities like the Ohio Newspapers Foundation Minority Scholarship have also helped a number of students attend college. Applications are due on March 31 every year, and the financial award is for high school seniors who will be enrolling in a Ohio college or university the following school year. The student must submit two letters of recommendation from high school faculty members who know the student’s academic and career goals. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA to be eligible.

The Catharine Lealtad Scholarship is another financial award that can benefit African-American students. Native American and Hispanic students are eligible for this award as well. Students must show that they have achieved high grades throughout high school and have been heavily involved in school-related activities. The scholarship award is $3,000.

Scholarships for African-American high school seniors can also be found at a high school counselor’s office. Chances are the counselor will know of resources that offer financial assistance to African-American students that may not be readily available online. A financial advisor can also help African American families find the right scholarships and grants for their high school seniors. These financial awards, along with government financial aid, could possibly cover the entire cost of a student’s college education.
