Learn About The Jefferson Scholarship Program

The Jefferson scholarship is offered by the Jefferson Scholar Foundation and provides for a full tuition scholarship program to select graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Virginia. The scholarships have been named after Thomas Jefferson, visionary and founder of the University. The Foundation aims to attract, identify and nurture individuals possessing the highest qualities of scholarship, citizenship and leadership. Aside from funding fees and tuition, the Jefferson scholarship program offers undergraduates with extensive programming that includes an international travel, introductory outdoor weekend, internships, citizenship institute, an extensive speaker series and a summer leadership.

History And Background Of The Jefferson Scholarship Program

Jefferson scholarship was founded in 1980 by the Board of Managers of the University of Virginia’s Alumni Association. In fact, the Jefferson Scholar Foundation came into being due to board’s desire to have a tangible program in place that reflects all the educational ideals of Thomas Jefferson. Twelve scholars graduated the first class in 1985. In the subsequent years since its inception, the foundation worked for increasing the size of Jefferson Scholar classes. There was considerable increase in regional competitions and they stand at 50 at present. The number of nominees have increased to over 1,600 each year, and around 760 University of Virginia’s alumni participate in the nomination and selection process every year.

Undergraduate Program From The Jefferson Scholars Foundation

University of Virginia has been producing leaders for self-governing people, and this has been its primary goal. In fact, nurturing future leaders has been the core mission at of Jefferson Scholar Foundation. The foundation wants to attract most promising leaders, citizens and scholars of the world and to give them sufficient moral and financial support, so that they can develop their talent and use them for the welfare of University Community.

The undergraduate scholarship program is being offered since the inception of Jefferson Scholars Foundation and is attracting undergraduate leaders since 1980. Currently, Jefferson scholarship is being offered to 117 scholars in residence at the University of Virginia. The scholarship covers the entire cost of attendance for the four years course, and the stipend includes fees, tuition, supplies, books, personal expenses, board and room.

In 2014, all international or out-of-state or Jefferson Scholars will receive an annual stipend of around $53,000 and Jefferson Scholars from the Commonwealth of Virginia will receive over $26,000 every year. Aside from the financial component of the Jefferson scholarship, there’s an extensive enrichment program that aims to support and nurture the students throughout their four years stay at University of Virginia. The program also encourages community development between Graduate Fellows, Scholars, alumni and staff.

Graduate Program

The Jefferson Fellowship was established in 2001, and is being offered in the University of Virginia. It’s based solely on merit, the University of Virginia and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation seek to attract J.D., MBA and Ph.D candidates who excel in their academic field and show promise as teachers, scholars, business leaders and public servants in the US and beyond. At the university, the Jefferson Fellows get a chance to enhance the qualities of their undergraduate learning experience, contribute to the University’s intellectual mission and life and play an important role in recruitment.
