The number of students enrolling in college degree programs has significantly decreased in the last couple of years. For those looking to attend college there are scholarships that can help cover the expense. The Thurgood Marshall scholarship can help qualified students cover the cost of tuition and related expenses.

Since the year 1987 the Thurgood Marshall scholarship helps to fund educational programs at Black Colleges and Universities across the country. This scholarship is awarded once a year to students that apply and meet the criteria. The applications for the Thurgood Marshall scholarship have to show financial need. This information and all other information for this scholarship are going to need to be verified. The scholarships can only be used to pay tuition costs, on campus housing, books, and other college fees. It cannot be used for housing off campus. The average amount award to the students is $13,000 per college semester. The scholarship is non renewable unless otherwise indicated by this fund.

To Apply For The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship

To apply for the Thurgood Marshall scholarship a student has to meet a specific criteria. The student must be willing to put forth the effort for their education. Their grade point average must be at least a 3.0 and must complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Student must also be accepted and attend one of the 47 colleges that this fund supports. Many of these schools are historic black universities. Students must be citizens of the United States or permanent residents. Students are going to have to show they board while they need this scholarship. Applicants need to show they have strong leadership skills, and are working to better themselves and those around them, and have done various community service activities. Each applicant also needs a letter from a faculty or another staff member at their school telling why they need this scholarship and why they deserve the scholarship. Students must have all of this information in to the board by February. After this date the board will review applications and award funds as they see appropriate. The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship fund was founded in 1987 in honor of Justice Thurgood Marshall. The goal of this fund was to ensure that higher education is available to all students regardless of their ability to pay for college. The fund has expanded over the years to include both law schools and medical schools. To date this scholarship fund has provided over 100 millions dollars in assistance to students for their education. The fund is also partnering with several other organizations to be able to provide even more assistance to students. This fund will continue to provide assistance to help see that all students are able to get a quality education.
