What Is The Elks Scholarship
The Elks Scholarship began with the Jolly Corks. The Jolly Corks started as a group of actors and entertainers determined to have fun and at the same time, avoid a New York Excise tax in 1867. The Jolly Corks got their name from their strict mind-set on having fun and with a clever trick they performed that included corks and resulted in winning rounds of drinks.
The Elks National Foundation provides more than $3.65 million in scholarships each year.
The Elk Scholarships are for undergraduate studies only. A student is not able to receive more than one Elks Scholarship award or grant in any one academic year.
The Elks Scholarships awards may be used for the cost of attendance expenses. In order to receive the payment, the student must send the completed verification of enrollment form, then a check will be payable and mailed directly to the school to establish a credit fort that student. The Elks Scholarship foundation will notify the student when a check has been sent. A time frame of 4-6 weeks must be allowed after the date the check was mailed.
If a student terminates his or her course for any reason, the unused, balance must be returned directly to Elks Scholarship Foundations Chicago office. The Elks Scholarships are not transferable and may not be paid directly to the student.
There are no loan programs, vocational grants, or assistance for a graduate study and the Elks Scholarship Foundation does not maintain a mailing list.
The Elks Foundation Offers A Number Of Programs Such As
The Emergency Educational Program. This is a program that assists children of former Elks who are either deceased or totally disabled, who are pursuing their interest in furthering their education. The grant is for one year only and can range up to $4000. The guidelines for this program are that the elk parent or step parent must have been in good standing for at least one year at the time of his or her death, or the parent or step parent must have been in good standing for at least a year before becoming totally disabled and must continue to be an elk in good standing when the applicants application is reviewed and a decision is made. The applicant must show proof of need for financial assistance, must be unmarried, under the age of 23 as of Dec 31 of the year of application. The applicant must also be a full-time, 12 semester hours, student at an accredited US institution. The outcome of the review of the circumstances regarding the death or disability of the parent or step parent, must be reviewed by the Elks National Foundation and may affect the approval of the grant.
Another program the Elks National Foundation offers is the Legacy Awards program. These scholarships are $4000, ($1000 given over 4 years time) and the foundation will offer up to 250 awards.
Any child, grandchild, step child, step grandchild or legal ward of a living Elk who joined the order on or before April 2011 or a charter member of a lodge on or after April 1 2011 Elk may apply for this program. The applicant must be a high school senior.
