Huggable Heroes® – A Build-A-Bear Scholarship
The History of Huggable Heroes
The Build A Bear Scholarship, Huggable Heroes, was created in honor of a young girl, Nikki Giampolo, who lost her fight with cancer in 2002 at only 15 years old. Nikki loved life, children and teddy bears. And she shared that love by giving teddy bears to all those around her, including her doctors. While battling cancer, Nikki worked hard to raise awareness of children’s cancer.
Nikki touched many lives, and after she passed away her family and friends wanted her compassion to be passed on, so they shared her story with Build A Bear Workshop. Because of her story, the Build A Bear Scholarship, Huggable Heroes was created. This program celebrates young leaders who are actively doing things to help make a difference in their communities, both local and world-wide.
How To Become A Huggable Hero?
There are so many ways to be considered eligible for the Build A Bear scholarship program. One way to be considered is to volunteer in your local community by hosting a clothes or food drive for local families in need, walking pets for the shelter in your hometown, or even helping an elderly neighbor with every day chores. Some ideas for assisting on a more broad, nation-wide scale can include helping a Special Olympics event, working to preserve endangered species, raising money to help build a village in Kenya and educating others of children’s cancer research are just a few ways. Other ways past winners have contributed their time include babysitting for free, helping with after school tutoring, and gathering supplies and putting together care packages to send to soldiers.
