The Tom Joyner Foundation has maintained a vision to provide support to students attending or seeking to attend historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) regardless of their economic or social means. The foundation believes that all students deserve the opportunity to succeed in life and attend college.
To apply for the Tom Joyner scholarship application applicants must meet specific criteria. First of all, applicants must be U.S. citizens. Tom Joyner scholarship application applicants must be seniors in high school ready to graduate in 2014 during the spring. Students applying for the Tom Joyner scholarship application must also have a 3.50 GPA and a 2100 SAT minimum score or a 30 score on the ACT. It is required for applicants to have shown leadership qualities through participating in extracurricular, community service or other activities that would demonstrate ability. Additionally, Tom Joyner scholarship applicants must have been accepted by July 1, 2014 into a HBCU.
Finalists will be selected based on their letters of reference, creative and intellectual abilities, academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities and original essays. The Full Scholarship Selection Committee will then interview all finalists. Interviews will take place around or on April 5, 2014.
The Tom Joyner scholarship application for the Tom Joyner Foundation Full Ride Scholarship is the most prestigious award that the organization bestows upon an applicant. This Fall 2014 scholarship will be awarded to a freshman entering a HBCU. It recognizes personal qualities, strong character and academic excellence. The recipient of the award receives room and board stipends (this includes books) as well as a waiver of full tuition. A 3.0 GPA plus 15 credit hours each semester must be maintained by the scholarship recipient.
To apply, Tom Joyner scholarship application applicants must submit two copies (one must be certified) of an official high school transcript. ACT or SAT scores must be included or forwarded to the foundation. Two copies of a list of an applicant’s 2013-2014 high school courses must also be included. Tom Joyner scholarship application applicants must also send a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher and another person who can give an objective recommendation like a counselor, teacher or administrator. A family member cannot write a letter of recommendation for an applicant. The letter must include the length of time the person has known the applicant and their unique qualities that make them deserving of the scholarship. Lastly, an essay of 350 words or less must be submitted. The essay should be about what moment in an applicant’s life was most impressionable and how that experience has influenced their future goals.

Everything must be mailed to The Tom Joyner Foundation, Attention: Full Ride Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 630495, Irving, TX 75063. The application deadline for the full ride scholarship ends yearly on January 17.
