The Ed Bradley Scholarship
The Ed Bradley Scholarship is a $10,000 scholarship offered to aspiring journalists, although it’s open to college students in any major. The scholarship is named after the renowned CBS journalist Edward Rudolph Bradley, who had an almost 40 year career in journalism. As a journalist he covered the fall of Saigon, and incurred shrapnel wounds while covering the war in Cambodia. This highly respected reporter was the recipient of 19 Emmy Awards and a Peabody. He was later made a television anchor, and in 2000 was awarded the Paul White Award for excellence in journalism. He was the first black White House television correspondent, and covered over 500 stories for CBS News. In 1994, Ed Bradley and the Radio Television Digital News Association began offering the scholarship to college students looking for a career in electronic journalism.
The Ed Bradley scholarship is meant for college students at the sophomore level or higher who are fully enrolled in classes. College freshmen and students who have less than a full academic year remaining before graduation are not able to win the scholarship. If you are interested in the Ed Bradley Scholarship, you must be sure to build up a suitable portfolio showcasing experience in various journalistic roles. Experience editing or producing news broadcasts on video sites would be helpful in securing the scholarship. However, experience in writing online news is also suitable. Applicants are required to have a suitable letter of commendation from a dean or college advisor. As it is geared towards electronic journalism, experience and work samples on internet sites like Youtube are also needed. The Ed Bradley scholarship is only offered to one student a year, and the applicant must apply for only one scholarship.
