The Ella Fitzgerald Foundation was created by Ella Fitzgerald herself in 1993. Known fondly as the First Lady of Song, Ella wanted to use the success she enjoyed in her lifetime to benefit and support people of all ages, nationalities and socio-economic backgrounds, the same way her music crossed all barriers. In her lifetime she received 13 Grammy Awards and sold more than 40 million albums. The Ella Fitzgerald Foundation strives to help at-risk and disadvantaged youth achieve a better quality of life.

The original goals of this foundation are kept intact by the Board of Directors. They continue to provide charitable grants in four major areas of interest:

  • Educational opportunities for children
  • Assistance to music students to help foster the love and knowledge of music
  • Health care, including food, shelter and counseling to those in need
  • Medical care and research specifically for diabetes, vision problems and heart disease

The Ella Fitzgerald Foundation also makes grants available to organizations that provide after-school enrichment activities for at-risk children. There are also scholarships available to fund college scholarships. Exposure to music education is a natural outgrowth of the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation. Supporting a love of music, the foundation makes grants to provide music education for children and young adults.

Individuals interested in applying for a scholarship through the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation for one of the participating organizations must provide the following:
1. Complete the application form
2. Write a 250 word description of their background and their interests. In this essay, it is also important to state why they are interested in the arts programs.
3. A Letter from their parent or guardian redefining the reason for the request and explaining why this particular child will benefit from the program.
4. Finally, a letter of recommendation is required from a teacher or other individual who can detail the child’s unique talents and explain how participation will enhance skills.

Currently, Camp Broadway in New York, New York, and Camp Broadway in Atlanta, Georgia are accepting applications to their summer camp program for theater-loving kids. The camp is taught by trained Broadway professionals and is designed to build confidence while inspiring creative expression.

Past programs who have received assistance include The New York Pops, Smithsonian Institution and Craig School of Business. Scholarships were awarded for the USC Thornton School of Music where USC jazz students were able to teach music to kids in the neighborhood schools. This partnership gives students much needed teaching experience and provide mentoring and lessons to at-risk youth. Another musically inclined program called the Young Musicians Foundation has not only receive continuing support from the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation, but since the music education outreach programs are so amazing, the foundation believes it is exactly what The First Lady of Music had in mind when planning this charitable group.

Applications to all their programs are reviewed on a first come, first serve basis so it is helpful to stay mindful of all the deadlines.
