Grants for Redheads: The Myths and Facts
Every year high school seniors and college students everywhere scour the internet looking for grants to help pay for school, and year after year the internet resurfaces the myth of the Redheaded Scholarship.
Grants for redheads may sound silly but for years this seeming rumor would turn up. There would be questions posted to forums, mentions in articles without a citation and google searches, but the redhead scholarship seemed to be an elusive unicorn.
That is… until Scholarship Red.
Scholarship Red (http://scholarshipred.com/) was started in 2009-2010 by someone taken in by the same stories of grants for redheads, and frustrated that they didn’t seem to actually exist. Redheads, at roughly 4% of the world’s population- only 2% in the US- are slowly going into extinction because the trait is recessive. It was time to support the academic progress of ginger youngsters.
Scholarship Red is a $500 dollar grant for natural redheads residing in the US that are high school juniors or seniors and are applying to a two or four-year accredited school. Transcripts must also show a GPA of 2.5.
The ginger applicant must also create something original that represents what it is like to be a redhead. This can be an essay, creative writing, a work of art or anything that speaks to the redhead experience. Send documents as attachments along with 2 pictures to prove redheadedness (one must be a childhood photo) with the subject line: First Name Last Name 2014 Application to firstname.lastname@example.org. The grant for redheads application process is open until midnight on Sunday, May 4th 2014.
If You Think Grants for Redheads are Silly…
If grants for redheads sounds ridiculous to you, boy are you in for a surprise. Once you start searching for scholarships you will find that there really is grant money out there for some wild reasons.
• Field of Study
There are lists a mile long for scholarships by field of study, but if you are heading off to school to study something out of the ordinary, the scholarships not only still exist but may offer little competition. There are scholarships for everything from parapsychology to candy technology. Add to the list Funerary Science or Enology and Viticulture (the sciences of wine making). If your interests at school stray from your everyday liberal arts majors, start researching for grant money in your field.
• Hobbies and Interests
Many people think it is the extracurricular activities that make or break your college applications, but it might also be the extracurriculars that help pay your way. Make a list of any interests or hobbies you have ever participated in and which you can discuss in an essay for a couple of hundred words if you had to. Take that list as your research guide and start looking for grants.
When scholarships go unclaimed, money is left on the table. If you don’t qualify for the grants for redheads, maybe that week of bowling camp or learning to knit from your grandmother will reward you.
