One of the many ways in which Chick-fil-A prides themselves in helping their employees attend the colleges of their choice and attain the highest education that they can possibly get is by making their own scholarships available to them. Over the course of the program’s existence, Chick-fil-A has donated over $30 million and has enabled over 30,000 of its employees attend over 500 colleges. Between 2009-2011 alone, Chick-fil-A awarded more than $7 million in scholarships to enable their employees to attend various colleges in at least 17 different locations.

It was in 1973 that Chick-fil-A’s founder, Truett Cathy established the chain’s first Leadership scholarship program. One of Cathy’s main goals in founding Chick-fil-A was to encourage employees to further their education. The Chick-fil-A scholarships program was developed of a stewardship for appreciation for the work that employees put into keeping the business running. Since then, the chain has awarded a total of more than $40 million for employees to attend more than 3,000 colleges and post-secondary level educational institutions.

Eligibility for Chick fil-A Scholarships

Eligibility for Chick fil-A Scholarships are very straightforward. You do not have to have your GPA at a certain level, be in any certain area of study or have any specific financial need. You must, however, be complete with your high school education or close to it, show a strong work ethic, be able to show proof of your enrollment in a college or technical school, be actively involved in school or community activities and show strong leadership abilities. You also must apply with the approval of a Unit Operator and obtain a letter of recommendation from him or her. You must also have a letter of recommendation from someone you know who does not work for the Chick-fil-A company (preferably a teacher, a past or current volunteer supervisor or a past work supervisor).

The scholarship is available to all class levels. Scholarships are awarded in $1,000 to 1,400 employees and are non-renewable.

Established in 1996, in honor of their founder, the chain also awards additional S. Truett Cathy Scholar awards, which also award $1,000 to the top 25 Chick-fil-A scholarship beneficiaries. Between 1996 and the present, more than $400,000 have been awarded.

In conjunction with the Chick-fil-A scholarship, Berry College in Mount Berry Georgia is particularly known for taking WinShape College Program Scholarships. Participating students obtain a yearly scholarship of up to $4,000 for every year that they attend the college. These students also have the opportunity to learn to navigate a 30-foot sailing vessel and travel to the Lincoln Memorial.

The Chick-fil-A scholarship is perhaps one of the best examples of how society in general could be of assistance to those who are planning to further their education but are set back financially due to the recent double recession. By providing their own scholarship program, Chick-fil-A is not only contributing to the betterment of the lives and the manifestation of the potential of their individual employees but also to the improvement of society in general.
