Big Y Foods is one of the biggest and locally owned supermarket chain in the Southern New England. It’s a family owned and operated business that has represented excellence in the food sector since 1935.

Big Y understands it responsibility towards its employees, customers and community. It carries out various community development programs and also offers annual scholarships. The scholarship program was established in 1981, and includes series of scholarships that honors Big Y founders: the late Gerald D’Amour and his brother Paul H. D’Amour. In addition, there is a separate scholarship series (originally funded by its employees) for commemorating the 50th anniversary of company, recognizing the contribution of area firefighters and law enforcement officers and a category that also acknowledges the sacrifices made by Military Service members and their families.

Big Y awards more than 300 scholarships every year totaling more than $300,000. All the scholarships provided by Big Y recognize academic merit and achievements. They are awarded every year to the academically outstanding students residing in the Big Y market area. These scholarships are available to undergraduates, high school seniors, non-traditional and community college students. There are also awards for non traditional and traditional students at the graduate and undergraduate level.

Applicants of Big Y scholarships will have to submit college entrance examination scores, transcripts, and two recommendation letters. All Big y employees should submit one recommendation from their supervisor. All selections are based on awards, achievements, leadership positions, community involvement, and class rank. Eight Big Y scholarships are specifically meant for dependents of firefighters and law enforcement officers.

To be eligible, all student’s permanent school or residence should be located within Central and Western Massachusetts, the state of Connecticut, Norfolk County and Massachusetts. However, all Big Y employees are eligible regardless of their residence.

How to secure application for Big Y scholarship?

You can get application for Big Y scholarship from October-January every year from any Big Y location. These applications are also available from guidance offices of the schools located with the Big Y market area. You can also download them from the Big Y website. Big Y will inform all scholarship applicants by email. Their names are also posted on the Big Y website.

What else is required for Big Y scholarship?

* College Entrance Exams Scores. (you can send photocopy)

* Transcript of your grades. (photocopy acceptable)

* Personal resumé, and fact sheet Activities (for instance: sports, music or organizations), awards, community involvement, various achievements, leadership positions, class rank

* Two letters of recommendations, including one from teacher

* Mail your application and supporting documents in a
9″ x 12″ envelope, no staples or paperclips.

What’s the Deadline?

All information in the application should be complete and all the supporting documents should be posted by Feb 1. Incomplete applications will be rejected. You can also get scholarship applications in October from all Big Y locations, including Table & Wine and Fresh Acres. You can also pick applications from guidance offices of schools in Big Y’s market area. Previous Big Y scholarship recipients cannot reapply. For more info please visit official site.
