The main goal of the Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay Contest is to promote education about the Holocaust and finding commonalities between the Holocaust and how it relates to the world as it currently is. It is also one of the many memorials of the millions of victims of the event. Since the project’s launch in 1995, the Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay Contest has awarded a total of over $1,000,000 in scholarships and has had over tens of thousands of students participate in their programs as writers and/or researchers. The project also provides materials to teachers who are covering the Holocaust in their classrooms.

Throughout the existence of the Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay Contest, its main foundation, the Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation has joined with the world’s leading museums and other nonprofit organizations in order to further spread the message and lesson of the Holocaust.

About the Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay Contest

The contest is open to high school students (including those who are home schooled) ages 19 and below who are currently studying the Holocaust, are high school seniors about to graduate or those studying to obtain a GED. The students must be residents of Guam, the Virgin Islands, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the U.S. or studying abroad in the U.S.

Essays must be no more than 1,200 words. Within the body of their essay, the students must discuss the importance of the history and lessons as well as throw out suggestions as to how to fight prejudice, petty discrimination and violence in the world as it is today. The deadline is usually sometime in April. Although the contest is not guaranteed to go through every year and they didn’t have it in 2013 because Holland & Knight was busy helping the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum with their 20th anniversary.
